Walk to Work Day – 27 March
March 23, 2026
Step outside and take a walk!
Spending time outside is one of the easiest ways to support your health. Fresh air, sunshine and a short walk can help you move more, feel better and lower your risk of type 2 diabetes.
This day encourages everyone to add a little more walking into their daily routine.
You don’t need to walk the whole way to work. Even walking part of the trip, or taking a short walk before or after work, can make a difference.
Walking is a simple way to start.
Here are some easy ideas:
- Walking part of the way to work
- Taking a short walk during your lunch break
- Walking with a friend or colleague
- Getting off the bus one stop earlier
- Taking the stairs instead of the lift
Every step counts! You’ll be surprised how much even short walks can help over time.

Make the most of green spaces
Western Sydney has many great places to walk and be active. Being outside can make exercise more fun.
You might like to try:
- A local walking group, like Heart Foundation Walking Groups
- A Parkrun near you
- A community outdoor fitness class
- Walking tracks in the Western Sydney Parklands
Or keep it simple:
- Go for a walk in your local park
- Do some gardening
- Play outside with your kids or pets
- Meet a friend for a walk instead of coffee

Spending time in green spaces is good for your body and mind.
Being outdoors can:
- Help you move more and stay strong
- Support healthy blood sugar and heart health
- Lift your mood and reduce stress
- Help you sleep better
- Help you feel more connected with others
- Give you a boost of vitamin D from sunshine
Just 10-15 minutes outside each day can help you feel better and stay active.
Remember, you don’t need to do a lot all at once. Small steps every day can make a big difference.
Grab your hat, put on some sunscreen, and enjoy a walk outside. Your body and mind will thank you!
