Stay on track this holiday season!
December 12, 2025
The holiday season is a time for fun, family, and celebrations. It’s also a time when people can gain a little extra weight. With busy schedules and lots of food around, it can feel tricky to stick to your health goals.
The good news – you can enjoy the holidays and still stay on track! Here are some simple tips from a dietitian to help you:
Top Tips to Keep You on Track

1. Focus on keeping your weight steady Don’t stress about losing weight during the holidays, just try to stay at your current weight.
2. ‘Bookend’ your festive eating Eat your usual healthy meals before and after your holiday celebrations. Limit festive treats to one week only (for example, December 24 to January 1).
3. Make small healthy swaps Enjoy your favourite foods but make easy changes where you can.
4. Watch your portions Use the portion plate method: half your plate veggies, a quarter whole grains (like basmati rice or pasta), and a quarter lean proteins (like chicken or fish).
5. Limit grazing Instead of snacking throughout the day, stick to set mealtimes.
6. Choose low-sugar drinks Skip sugary drinks like soft drinks, juice, and flavoured milk. Look back at past tips for healthy drink ideas.
7. Pack healthy snacks when you’re out Bring fruit, veggies, low-fat yogurt, or unsalted nuts when traveling or visiting friends.
8. Keep moving Try to be active at least 30 minutes a day. Every little bit counts!
9. Eat mindfully Slow down, notice your hunger, and eat only when you’re truly hungry.
10. Don’t eat just to please others It’s okay to say “no” to extra servings if you don’t need them.
