Does Exercise Really Make You Hungrier?
September 29, 2026
You go for a walk or finish a workout and then a thought pops into your head: “What if all this exercise just makes me hungrier and I eat everything back?”
It’s a common worry when you’re trying to lose weight.
But exercise doesn’t automatically make you overeat. After moderate or vigorous exercise, hunger can actually decrease for a short time. This may be partly due to temporary changes in hormones that influence hunger and feelings of fullness.
Does exercise really make you that hungry?
Not necessarily. With regular exercise, you may feel a little hungrier at certain times because your body is using more energy. That’s normal, the important part is what you do with that hunger. Think of it as information from your body: “I’ve used energy. How can I refuel well?”
Try these 3 simple steps
1. Don’t let yourself get overly hungry before exercise
2. Have something ready afterwards
Don’t wait until you’re so hungry that you grab whatever is closest.
Keep it simple:
- Greek yoghurt + fruit
- Egg + wholegrain toast
- Fruit + a handful of nuts
- Tuna or chicken + wholegrain crackers
No expensive shakes or meal prep required.
3. Watch the “I earned it” trap
“I walked today, so I deserve that cake.” Sound familiar?
Exercise may change your appetite, but feeling hungry after being active is normal. Rather than worrying about getting hungry, focus on regular meals, nourishing foods and listening to what your body needs. Don’t let the fear of getting hungry stop you from moving.
