Celebrating National Diabetes Week with our community

July 17, 2026

It’s that time of year again — National Diabetes Week (12–18 July)!

National Diabetes Week is Diabetes Australia’s annual campaign to help Australians understand diabetes and how it affects individuals, families and communities. This year’s message is about building a healthier future for everyone.

At Western Sydney Diabetes (WSD), National Diabetes Week is a chance to come together with our community to raise awareness and share ways to support better health.

What did we get up to?
During the week, the WSD team connected with community members, health professionals and local leaders to share information, start conversations and highlight the support available across Western Sydney.

Community Diabetes Forum
WSD hosted a community forum, “See It Early, Act Early: From Gestational Diabetes to Eye Complications and Pre-diabetes Care.”

The forum brought together community leaders, healthcare professionals, government representatives and local partners to share knowledge and explore ways to support people living with, or at risk of, diabetes.

Topics covered included:

  • Understanding pre-diabetes and gestational diabetes
  • Looking after your health and spotting early risk signs
  • Preventing diabetes complications, including eye health
  • How healthy eating, lifestyle changes and programs like the 2kg Challenge can support better health

A panel discussion gave attendees the chance to hear from experts and pick up practical tips for everyday life.

Workers Blacktown
WSD partnered with Workers Blacktown to host an interactive information and sugar display.

The display helped community members see how much sugar is in everyday foods and drinks, sparking conversations about how food choices affect our health.

Visitors also learned more about the 2kg Challenge, and the WentWest team was on hand to answer questions and connect people with local primary care services.

Know your health: check in with your GP
National Diabetes Week is a great reminder that knowing your health is an important first step.

A simple way to learn about your diabetes risk is to ask your GP about an HbA1c blood test. This test:
  • Shows your average blood sugar levels over time
  • Helps you and your GP understand your diabetes risk
  • Is free once a year with Medicare for eligible people
  • Helps guide your next steps

If you haven’t had an HbA1c test recently, it’s worth making a time to speak with your GP.

Small steps, early checks and support from your healthcare team can help you take charge of your health.
